If the terms used seem confusing, you might read this.

Sometimes I make these clocks showing how much J goofs off, sort of like a pie graph in it's ability to make clear how (or how little) much goes where. It should be noted that the white "working" spaces do not necessarily indicate work being done, just that no obviously not-working was being done. Today, I might point out, was a good day for J. I should also point out that J's shift (and mine, to be fair*) ends at 3:30, one of his better hours, and that there was probably** a 2nd shift guy sitting around waiting to get on the machine that J (finally) is working so hard on. This is a pattern with J.

* Though, also, to be fair, my replacement usually shows up at least 15 minutes late, while J's shows up 15 minutes early.

** I didnt make a note, so it's also possible that the replacement is working, and that J is somewhere else doing something that passes for work and so collecting overtime. This is also a pattern with J.

[3:43 ; I leave the building for the weekend]

NOTE 1: J has been working this morning, but he seems to have been doing an awful lot of paperwork. While sitting.

NOTE 2: It's not a long absence, but his car moved.

NOTE 3: At this point, apparently not satisfied with the ability to sit around while the machine ran uninterrupted for 15 minutes, J slowed the speed down by about half, putting it at a speed of about 28 minutes a cycle, which is weird, since he technically had only 20 minutes left in his shift. Not that he would leave when he was supposed to.

* I generally only note malingering when the machine is not running, but here I am denotinging this "acceptable" malingering by asterisks thusly - * 8:33-8:34 ; sitting *, versus the un-asterisked 8:33-8:34.

Here's another of my clock graphs showing J's goofing off, sort of like a pie graph in it's ability to make clear how much goes where. It should be noted that the white "working" spaces do not necessarily indicate work being done, just that no obviously not-working was being done. It should also be noted that today's graph looks a lot better than yesterday's.

3:18-3:20 ; yakking
3:20-3:40 ; sitting, phone
3:48- ? ; wandering
[3:48 ; I clock out, leave about 5 minutes later]

NOTE 1: Today's assignment is the same as yesterday's and the day before's. Basically, it's a fairly simple job, involving about 2 to 5 minutes of set-up and around 15 minutes of staring at the machine. The job is done repeatedly, the whole thing lasting at least a couple of hours, usually, if not all day. I generally only note malingering when the machine is not running, but today I decided to do something different; "acceptable" malingering is denoted by asterisks thusly - * 8:33-8:34 ; sitting *, versus the un-asterisked 8:33-8:34. No particular reason, really (though such entries dont start before 8:49).

NOTE 2: Quote from J, who was looking to break a $5: "I'll just go to the store, then. I'll be right back." He said this to HK, our boss. As you may recall, yesterday he left the building and drove off three times that were not lunch. He's the type of person who will be smugly thinking of this while saying that line. Is that an unfair characterization unusable in court? Yes. So what?

NOTE 3: At this point, apparently not satisfied with the ability to sit around while the machine ran uninterrupted for 15 minutes, J slowed the speed down by about half (putting it back at yesterday's speed of about 28 minutes a cycle.

NOTE 4: J suddenly appeared in the department. The first I saw him was over by the door to the outside where he was sweeping the floor.

NOTE 5: While J was sitting and talking on the phone (and his machine was still not started back up though he'd returned from lunch over 15 minutes earlier), HK came by the department. He stood near my area for a bit looking at J with what I can only describe as disgust, then headed over near his machine and started working on a thing. J realized who was near by after a couple of minutes, but I'm not sure if even then he started his machine up right away (unfortunately, I did not make a note of it). I cant tell from my notes that there was any machine activity before some indicated at 1:50, but surely there had to have been, especially with HK in the area. Perhaps it is merely that with HK there and him having been running his machine at a normal speed so far that day, he was actually doing work in between my noted activity, including running the machine.

NOTE 6: J was apparently watching some sort of video on his phone, since one doesnt usually see that kind of intense, unmoving focus devoted to text messaging.

NOTE 7: 2nd shift had arrived by now, and so took over J's abandoned machine, restarting it since he was not there.

I made clocks showing J's goofing off, sort of like a pie graph in it's ability to make clear how much goes where. It should be noted that the white "working" spaces do not necessarily indicate work being done, just that no obviously not-working was being done, though considering the dearth of white spaces, perhaps we should just let him have those.

3:37-3:50 ; wandering
3:50-3:55 ; yakking
3:55- ? ; wandering
[3:59 ; I go home] - J's car still in parking lot

NOTE 1: This is hearsay, but I'm told that it is standard practice for J to arrive at least a half an hour before his scheduled time, clock in, then head back out of the building for a half hour or so, returning with breakfast, which he then eats. I have seen him come in the building with breakfast, but I cannot confirm the time-clock part.

NOTE 2: At this point, I've got to explain the job that J was assigned (again - see July 24). It is a fairly simple job, involving about 2 to 5 minutes of set-up and around 15 minutes of staring at the machine. The job is done repeatedly, the whole thing lasting at least a couple of hours, usually, if not all day. Apparently, 15 minutes was not enough for J, because he slowed the machine speed down to the point that it takes almost a half an hour to complete each cycle. I generally only note malingering when the machine is not running. If it involves wandering, then I may start the time at the point when J left the area, rather than when the machine stops.

NOTE 3: Another bit of hearsay: I'm told that J has a habit of clocking out for lunch at 10:30, continuing to work, then clocking back in at 11:00 when he leaves the building. He also does it sometimes when he eats lunch at later times (or has two lunchs). Again, I havent witnessed this. I'd love to compare my notes and the time-clock records, though.

NOTE 4: while technically the machine was still running at this point, the internet is strictly forbidden, including Facebook. I think he only got off because one of the minor managers who he likes to keep on the good side of showed up.

NOTE 5: It should be noted that the machine had stopped at this point (2:02). I know this because I was timing it. It took about 27 minutes to complete the cycle. The machine being run by St, on the other hand, took 16 minutes to complete its cycles.

NOTE 6: At one point I had business near J. He was sitting facing the computer, mouse in hand, asleep.

NOTE 7: Starts machine after enough time has passed to do one of his own cycles, or two of anyone else's. Leaves building in his car shortly thereafter (2:45ish). Returns at 2:58.

A final bit of hearsay: J apparently hangs around the building long after I've left. I cant imagine him doing so off the clock (though it's possible), which again leads back to my strong desire to see his time-clock report. Reportedly, on this day he left around 5:30, two hours after his shift was supposed to be over.

NOTE 1: At this point, I've got to explain the job that J was assigned.

NOTE 2: At 1:01, HK busted J on his phone. His machine was running, but he was so intent on his phone that HK walked up behind him and looked over his shoulder for 15 seconds or so (which is really a long time) before HK told him to put the phone away.
J was back on the phone at 1:31.

NOTE 3: MW hung around the sitting J until J apparently felt the pressure and got up and started cleaning. As soon as MW left, J resumed his seat.

NOTE 4: By 3:06, the second shift having come in, J wanders off somewhere. I'm not paying much attention at this point, so I cannot say for how long. I note his return at 3:18, but I couldnt say how long he'd been gone.

NOTE 1: First puts work on his table.

NOTE 2: Gets up due to help request from St.

NOTE 3: This is the second piece done so far.

NOTE 4: Count now 7 pieces

NOTE 5: For someone who doesnt do a lot of work, he sure spends a lot of time looking at the orders.

NOTE 6: Finished with first job. Item count, around 10 pieces or so, in a mere 3 hours on the clock. For reference, the preceding Friday, I did 105 identical pieces in a day in addition to at least one other order with multiple pieces. For identification purposes, these were "snowflakes".

NOTE 7: From now until 2:35, J will be "working" on a legitimate order, one which takes a lot of machine time to do and requires almost no supervision. I usually do these jobs while taking lunch. J actually stopped the job while he went to lunch. While the job was working on the machine, J spent the entire time sitting, playing with his phone, and wandering off occasionally.
The job consisted of 2 items with 50 pieces each. J did the job in three parts:
Part one, item one: 10:40-11:00, then paused for lunch, then resumed from 12:03-12:55
Part two, (I think) item two: 1:08-1:43
Part three, item two: 1:57-2:35

NOTE 8: All copies of the second piece were thrown away immediately after being finished, with J saying that the pieces were "no good". That he threw them away just after he finished them with no input from any sales or management tells me that he knew that the pieces were no good even as he was cutting them. A customer service rep responsible for the order had been by around 2:15 and had probably rejected them at that time, making the next twenty minutes of work (and sitting around) pointless wastes of time, money and material.

NOTE 9: A variation on the Daily Maintenance Call. This time he called a customer service rep, then sat and waited for someone to help him. Normally not a big deal, but it seems to be a pattern with him which is why I mention it.

* * * *

I made clocks showing J's goofing off, sort of like a pie graph in it's ability to make clear how much goes where. It should be noted that the white "working" spaces do not necessarily indicate work being done, just that no obviously not-working was being done.

I want to note here that J had every intention of "working" on my machine after I left the building, which is a blatant case of clock-riding on his part. I'm personally offended by the knowledge that a guy who doesnt work for even half the time for which he's paid will be making overtime, with (I'm sure) no more productivity than any other time he's on the clock. Effectively, he probably makes twice to five times what I make, if you base that number on hours that he is actually doing work of some sort. It's higher if you base it on productivity.

NOTE 1: Maintenance showed up almost immediately, I suspect surprising J. I really think he makes these calls at lunch time knowing that no one will respond, but this time someone did, and he was soon "back" to work.

NOTE 2: The only reason he got up (and this is often true) is because St asked for help lifting a heavy object, a fairly frequent occurrence lately.

* * * *

I made clocks showing J's goofing off, sort of like a pie graph in it's ability to make clear how much goes where. It should be noted that the white "working" spaces do not necessarily indicate work being done, just that no obviously not-working was being done.

[3:47 ; I leave work]

NOTE 1: I was apparently too busy up until I wrote this note at 8:12 to observe J, but he hadnt done any work yet.

NOTE 2: It is possible that J had been "working" down at the west end of the building during the afternoon, even though S has been back today. He shouldnt have been, but that doesnt mean he wasnt.

[3:36 ; I go home]

NOTE: There was work in the west end of the building to day which is usually done by S, but he was absent today, so J did it today instead, like yesterday. The western machine is at the other end of the building and is a load-and-come-back-in-a-half-an-hour affair, meaning S normally spends about half his time there and the other half in department. This "accounts", i.e., gives him a plausible excuse, for the long "wandering" sessions during J's day. Sort of. I'm not sure J did any work in the department this day. S would have.

[4:04 ; go home]

NOTE 1: J had some sort of machine malfunction, so he paged maintenance, then waited around doing nothing. As far as I recall, maintenance didnt respond.

NOTE 2: There was work in the west end of the building to day which is usually done by S, but he was absent today, so J did it instead from this point on.

NOTE 3: At company meeting, everyone got rewarded for our hard work with a cup of frozen yogurt. Jr reports that J supposedly had 6 of these. She personally saw him eat 2, and I saw him eat 1 earlier.

Note: At this point J has chosen to do a job that has a lot of small items that take a lot of machine time, time in which J can talk and phone and wander and what have you but the machine is still running, and so I dont record those moments. Still, when the machine stops, the pencil comes out.

NOTE 1: J had a malfunction with a part of the machine he operates, so he called maintenance. Then, rather than do a job that didnt require that part, or borrow an identical part from another machine, he waited, doing nothing.

NOTE 2: Another malfunction. Also sitting and waiting. Am beginning to suspect something rather like Munchhausen-By-Proxy Syndrome.

NOTE 3: Repeatedly finishes a small part of his order, then sits down and carefully counts it, which would be (and probably is) unnecessary if one does the job correctly.

* J had worked steadily on part 3, indicating a time of 24 minutes per part, or roughly 30 minutes each. He has had time to do at least 5 parts since I noted his arrival. To be fair, the machine I operate goes twice as fast as J's, so he should have only finished half the amount of work that I did. He managed maybe a quarter.
