[3:48 ; I clock out, leave about 5 minutes later]
NOTE 1: Today's assignment is the same as yesterday's and the day before's. Basically, it's a fairly simple job, involving about 2 to 5 minutes of set-up and around 15 minutes of staring at the machine. The job is done repeatedly, the whole thing lasting at least a couple of hours, usually, if not all day. I generally only note malingering when the machine is not running, but today I decided to do something different; "acceptable" malingering is denoted by asterisks thusly - * 8:33-8:34 ; sitting *, versus the un-asterisked 8:33-8:34. No particular reason, really (though such entries dont start before 8:49).
NOTE 2: Quote from J, who was looking to break a $5: "I'll just go to the store, then. I'll be right back." He said this to HK, our boss. As you may recall, yesterday he left the building and drove off three times that were not lunch. He's the type of person who will be smugly thinking of this while saying that line. Is that an unfair characterization unusable in court? Yes. So what?
NOTE 3: At this point, apparently not satisfied with the ability to sit around while the machine ran uninterrupted for 15 minutes, J slowed the speed down by about half (putting it back at yesterday's speed of about 28 minutes a cycle.
NOTE 4: J suddenly appeared in the department. The first I saw him was over by the door to the outside where he was sweeping the floor.
NOTE 5: While J was sitting and talking on the phone (and his machine was still not started back up though he'd returned from lunch over 15 minutes earlier), HK came by the department. He stood near my area for a bit looking at J with what I can only describe as disgust, then headed over near his machine and started working on a thing. J realized who was near by after a couple of minutes, but I'm not sure if even then he started his machine up right away (unfortunately, I did not make a note of it). I cant tell from my notes that there was any machine activity before some indicated at 1:50, but surely there had to have been, especially with HK in the area. Perhaps it is merely that with HK there and him having been running his machine at a normal speed so far that day, he was actually doing work in between my noted activity, including running the machine.
NOTE 6: J was apparently watching some sort of video on his phone, since one doesnt usually see that kind of intense, unmoving focus devoted to text messaging.
NOTE 7: 2nd shift had arrived by now, and so took over J's abandoned machine, restarting it since he was not there.
I made clocks showing J's goofing off, sort of like a pie graph in it's ability to make clear how much goes where. It should be noted that the white "working" spaces do not necessarily indicate work being done, just that no obviously not-working was being done, though considering the dearth of white spaces, perhaps we should just let him have those.
